About Mamang Tsuper

"Para po" is the phrase commuters say in the Philippines when they arrive to their desired destination. This artwork represents the daily commute in the Philippines that kids from as young as 5 endured to get to the place they need to be, like school. We often take for granted the journey we go through and get fixated on what others have. As a young kid with parents working overseas, I had often watched my uncles and aunties arrive in a jeepney from work while mine were borders and oceans away. My cousins would run towards their parents waiting for their pasalubong (souvenirs). I had hoped that my parents would arrive back from work in one of these. Para po is dedicated to my parents for their hard work and the sadness they endured raising children from afar. Now that we are together in Aotearoa; I can say "Para po" as I am in my desired destination, with my family. This art piece carries the longing many migrant individuals and families have for their love ones back home.
